Historical Perspective

Reading through the original minutes of the founding meeting, I came across some excellent quotes that are surprisingly prophetic in nature.  They confirm why what we do at KCEE and what you do in the classroom is important.  It also confirms why KCEE is important to business success.

“Economic education cannot be sold – one does not sell ideas.  Any economy, to be healthy, represents a responsible citizenry, a responsible industry, and a responsible government.  Economic security is a creative effort and is controlled by man.  Tomorrow’s leaders, therefore, must be prepared today as to how capitalism works and why it works and how it can be made better.  Free states can crumble without growing generations believing in capitalism.  Our economy can be directed.  It must be used properly – it cannot be sold.  We are stewards of capitalism.  The idea of capitalism is shared. People must be educated in the ideas of this economic system and these ideas must be communicated to students.  Capitalism is learned only by being undergone.  We cannot convert people – only ourselves.  We cannot sell our economic system; we can only experience it? (M. L. Frankel, Director of the Joint Council on Economic Education, May 19, 1959)

“Business does not have a special view of economics and economic processes, the view of business is essentially the same as that of a responsible citizen.  Business and each citizen should recognize that our economic system is an interplay of social, political, and economic forces and that economic decisions are being made by the citizen in every election.” (J. Hardin Smith, Vice President and General Manger, Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, May 19, 1959)

“Citizens in a self-governing society cannot make intelligent political decisions if they are illiterate in economics” (W.I. Boone, President, Kansas Farm Bureau, May 19, 1959)
